A DIFFERENT KIND OF LOVE
-
Walk behind me.
Not because I know the way,
but because every step I take
is a question asked of the ice.The wind will become your compass.
Hunger will become your teacher.
Silence will become your oldest friend.Do not fear the vastness.
We were never meant to fill it.
We were meant to listen to it.One day you will stand
where I stand now,
impossibly small
beneath a world far greater than yourself. And you will understand
that I was never showing you
where to go.
I was teaching you
how to belong.BAFFIN ISLAND, APRIL, 2026

We still fit beneath her.
The world has not asked us
to be brave yet.We know nothing
of hunger,
of distance,
of the silence that follows
when ice no longer returns. We only know
the slow rise of her breath,
the fortress of her arms,
the language of warmth.One day
these paws will carry us away
from this small circle of safety. But not today.
Today,
we believe
the world is as gentle
as the heartbeat
that surrounds us.And if there is a prayer
we are already whispering
without words,it is this—
let us remember this feeling
when the ice becomes larger than our courage,
and we must learn
to carry her love
where she no longer can.Arviat, Canada, 2018

BEHIND GLASS
-
Arviat, Canada – 2025
You come looking for freedom,
believing I am the one
who lives without walls. But I have watched you.
I have seen the glass
you build around your lives—
warm,
safe,
predictable.You call it comfort.
I wonder
when you forgot
that comfort
is not the same as freedom.Out here,
nothing is promised.Not the ice.
Not tomorrow.
Not even another meal.Yet every breath I take
belongs entirely to me.Perhaps that is why
you keep returning. Not to see a bear—
but to remember
the part of yourselves
that still belongs
to the wild. -

MOTHER’S PASSAGE
-
Baffin Island, 2026
I want to stop.
The snow holds
a thousand new stories,
and my paws
are still too small
for the world she crosses
without looking back. But she keeps moving.
She knows
what I do not.She knows
that curiosity
can cost a life.Here,
the wind carries
more than the scent of seals. It carries people.
So I learn
that strength
is not always standing still.Sometimes,
it is leaving.Sometimes,
love
is the mother
who never turns around—because she trusts
I will keep following.And I do.
One small step behind her,
already learning
that in this place, the bears who survive
are the ones
who know
when not to be seen. -

WAITING FOR THE ICE (PART II)
-
Arviat, Canada – 2025t
The ice has not come, and the sea lies open and still.
My cubs follow, small paws tracing the cracks in the stone.
They do not yet know hunger the way I do —
how it settles deep, where milk once was.
I lead them toward the wind, toward the memory of ice.
Every step, I listen for its return.
Until then, I keep moving —
because they are watching. -

PALE MOON
-
Baffin Island, Arctic Circle – 2025
Photographed at one of the highest points I’ve ever reached in Baffin Island, near the edge of the North Pole, Pale Mooncaptures a lone female polar bear moving through a vast expanse of silence and snow. This is my favorite place to photograph them — where the light feels weightless, the air holds its breath, and the world exists between shadow and dream.

WAITING FOR THE ICE
-
ARVIAT, Canada – 2025
The ice is late, and the sea no longer feeds me.
I move across the stone, each step heavier than the last.
The wind carries your scent before I see you —
soft, uncertain, human.
You come closer.
I do not move.
I have learned stillness; it keeps me alive.
In your eyes I see reflection, not fear.
For a moment, we are both waiting for the same thing —
the return of what has been lost. -

Do not mistake my quiet
for the absence of strength. These paws have carried me
across a lifetime of ice.
These claws have held me
where few lives can endure.Yet today,
I choose softness.I let the wind carry your scent.
I let the silence carry your presence.
I let you walk close enough
to see that even something this powerful
can move gently.Some distances
are not crossed by courage. They are crossed
by trust.Arviat, Canada, 2026
The gift of this photo was the incredible split second of proximity walking on foot in the tundra of Churchill, Canada.

HOLDING ON
-
I follow the memory of ice.
The old paths grow shorter each season, the distance between hunger and hope a little longer. I do not know why the world is changing. I only know that I must change with it.
Today, I found you instead of a seal.
I climbed onto a rock to taste the wind, carrying your scent where my frozen world once spoke only of snow and salt. You watched me. I watched you.
Then I slipped back into the water, searching again.
I am young. I am learning. I am holding on.

EVERMORE
-
Evermore
Baffin Island 2023
I crossed the frozen quiet with hunger deep in my ribs, driven by the pull of a female somewhere beyond the wind. Instinct led my steps the ancient rhythm of a life ruled by winter and need. Then I saw you.
Small against the vast white, a fragile shape in a land that shows no mercy.
You did not belong here, and I knew it instantly. So I lifted my voice a raw warning torn from my chest, not of rage, but of truth.
Go. Leave now. It was the only kindness a creature like me could give.
Still you stood there as I came closer through the storm-white silence a being carved from winter, a reminder that here, survival speaks louder than fear. And in that moment, I was the wild before you, untamed, unbroken, evermore.

NO MAN’S LAND
-
Svalbard | 2023
I was here before names.
Before ships cut the water.
Before eyes learned to search the horizon.
Ice carved me slowly, patient as centuries.
Storms shaped my spine, clouds made a home of my peak.
No footsteps remain on me for long.
No claim lasts. I do not belong to anyone—
and no one belongs here.
I watch bears pass like brief thoughts,
humans like passing weather.
You look up and call me No Man’s Land,
but land does not need permission to exist.
I stand between sea and sky,
holding the cold,
holding the silence,
long after you turn back.

PIET
-
Some lives are meant to remain beyond your reach. I belong to a world
that was never yours, yet somehow, for a brief moment, our paths crossed.
I watched you from the silence, measuring the distance that keeps us both
alive.
You stood still. You asked for nothing.
You understood that wonder does not ask to be possessed.
The wind carried your scent, the ice carried my steps,
and for an instant, our worlds recognized one another.
I did not look back to invite you closer. I did not look back to say goodbye.
I looked back because even the wild remembers when it has been seen without
being claimed.
Some encounters are too rare to belong to either of us.
They exist only to remind us that it is possible to love what we were never
meant to hold. And sometimes,
that is enough to change a life forever.

HOPE

You wonder
how I keep going.I do not.
I simply place
one paw
in front of the other.Hope is not something I carry.
It is something
you find
when you watch me
refuse to stop.SVALBARD, APRIL 2022

HOPE III
-
For hours, I searched the restless water,
following the edge between hunger and hope. The ice no longer waits where it once did,
so neither can I.I have learned to hunt what the sea now offers,
to read a changing world
that was never meant to change this quickly. Then I noticed you.
You drifted quietly,
watching more than searching.I came closer,
close enough that your eyes
could no longer fit me into a single frame. For a brief moment,
we were both unprepared. You reached for another camera.
I simply kept swimming.

THE LONELY WANDERER
-
I see it in your eyes.
You are trying to understand
how I belong
to a place
that seems determined
to forget life. You look at the wind,
the endless ice,
the silence that stretches
farther than memory, and you cannot imagine
how a heart continues to beat here. The truth is,
I do not survive
because this world is easy.I survive
because it is mine. You call it lonely.
I have never known
another home.If you find hope in me,
do not find it
in my strength.Find it
in the quiet decision
to keep placing
one paw
in front of the other,
even when the world
beneath them
keeps changing.SVALBARD, MAY , 2021

DOG’S KEEPER
-
Dog's Keeper
Churchill, Manitoba, Canada , 2018
I am one of the last who stayed close to the dogs at Mile 5, drawn by a bond few could imagine, yet one that became my winter truth.
Long before you found me resting in the quiet light, I walked the edges of Churchill alongside the presence of the man you knew as Brian Ladoon-the keeper of the Canadian Eskimo dogs, the human who believed that respect, not fear, could shape the space between our worlds.
He never fed us, never lured us closer. He simply allowed us to exist-bears and dogs— each honoring the unwritten code of the tundra.
In that fragile balance, I learned the shape of coexistence, where I could curl into the snow near his dogs with calm in my breath instead of hunger. When you saw me that day, I was resting just beyond their paws, a quiet testament to a rare peace forged through patience and understanding. You could hardly believe what your eyes held — a polar bear lying beside the descendants of ancient sled dogs, bound not by force, but by a trust born over countless northern moons.
Now he is gone, and I am one of the last echoes of the world he tended-a living reminder that even here, in the starkness of the Arctic, connection can survive against all odds. Through your lens, you carry the story of the keeper of the dogs—and through me, his legacy endures in the stillness of the snow.

You see
an empty horizon.You wonder
what I am searching for.Whether I have wandered
too far.Whether I am alone.
But you measure this world
with your own longing.I do not.
The wind is enough
to tell me where I am.The scent of the ice,
the weight of the snow,
the silence—they are all directions.
I am not lost.
I am simply
where no one else
has learned
how to belong.SVALBARD, 2021

GO WITH HAPPINESS
-
I walk across this white world, one quiet step at a time.
The snow remembers my paws, but the wind carries my worries away.
Ahead of me is only horizon—soft, open, endless.I do not rush. I do not fear.
The Earth holds me, the cold air lifts me, and the light guides my path.
In this moment, I carry nothing but myself… and that is enough.I move forward with trust, with calm,
with the simple happiness of being alive in this great, beautiful place.
May you walk your own path the same way—
lightly, bravely, and with your heart open to the world.Baffin Island, 2022
