We came together because that is what we do.

You saw nearly one hundred of us
moving across the land as one,
three herds becoming something larger than themselves.

You call it family.
For us, it is simply how we survive.

We remember one another.
We protect the young.
We walk beside the old.
We grieve our dead.
We know when one of us is missing.

You came looking for the great tuskers,
but so many of them were already gone.

And perhaps what you found instead
was what you were really searching for.

Not greatness in the size of our tusks,
but in the way we stand together.

For one brief moment,
our family aligned before you.

You took the photograph.

We simply stayed together.
