A baby elephant grows its tusk at age 3, so you can probably estimate his age. He’s so sweet, fragile, and at the same time, already strong enough to walk for endless kilometers. He represents hope, new generations of elephants hopefully experiencing less cruelty at the hands of humans.

BIG CRAIG
-
Big Craig needs no introduction. He is the biggest tusker still living in Kenya. He is old, patient, and if you are gentle enough, he will tolerate having you around for an afternoon. I have visited him many times over the years at his home outside of Amboseli National Park. At 51, he has experienced and seen so much that is almost inexplicable to have such a massive force next to you exuding such silence and peace.

AMONG THE LIVING

This is the photo I went to Africa seeking. During the pandemic, I was lucky enough to get to Africa twice, once in 2020 and once in 2021. My first series of work was called Isolation, which represents the solitude, calmness, and peace I felt in Africa in the absence of other people. The second came about when I realized how better off these animals are without us. In a way, the photo I so greatly desired, the photo of big tuskers, is no longer possible due to poaching. The family in this photo represents the essence of family unity I was looking for. I will never forget how three different herds came together in Amboseli National Park, my haven for photographing elephants. Almost one hundred elephants gathered as one, it was overwhelming and too beautiful to miss. I was consciously present in the moment, allowing myself to hold onto the memory. It’s almost impossible to photograph such a big group all at once, so this photo happened within those larger moments, when a family aligned perfectly to show their unity.

PERFECT DARKNESS
-
Perfect Darkness was taken laying low, sitting with this lion for seven hours waiting for him to finally get up and go find his pride. This image is simple but powerful and the proximity to him is what makes it so moving. We had built a little ramp, allowing us to get closer while coming out of the car ever so slightly, slowly, and carefully.

Flannery is my new favorite lion. It was pouring rain in Kenya and the skies were roaring so mighty if felt like the end of the world. Rainy season in Africa is harsh but if you are brave enough to get out in the bush, you find opportunities like this one. Every dripping hair from this elegant lion makes me remember the moment in a very unique way.

Slow Dancing represents grit, uniqueness, and intrigue. You cannot help but wonder what this matriarch has been through to be missing a tusk. Her tribulations give her character, elicit respect; she is not shy, and she is letting me know who is in charge. “Be gentle to us, and we will be too.”

EVERY NOW AND THEN

When you have the chance to jump out of the car and lay on the ground among ticks, you just do it. This giraffe gave me a moment of attention to lay low and accentuate her 18-foot presence from the thick grass; I love this photo for that reason, it gives this giraffe the presence she deserves to showcase her beauty.

ELVIS

Elvis is Kamara’s orphan friend. He is a success story, an orphan rhino taken care of by humans and released into the wild. This photo was very unexpected; he decided to come towards us while we were heading out to give Kamara one more goodbye. I was simultaneously excited and terrified when he started running full force straight at me. I was lucky to capture this incredible photo from the ground and quickly roll underneath the car just split seconds after taking it. I am so proud of this moment.

The Leading Bird was taken in Amboseli National Park, where this female carried a bird on top of her head as she led the herd, capturing the impromptu harmony of nature.
I laid low, uncomfortably under the car, to get this shot, an endeavor that was completely worth it.

Isolation was taken at the height of the pandemic; a lonely lion couldn’t be named anything else. Looking to take over a pride, a difficult task, this photo reminds me to have respect towards lions and the hard lives they live, surviving in a harsh and not always fair environment.

An elephant’s full force captured by Phase One. This image was taken with a very heavy and slow medium format camera. It is one of the photographs I’m most proud of. Photographing wildlife with a medium format is very risky because you can miss a lot, if not everything. In this case, I was lucky to capture every raw, powerful detail this camera was able to discover.

Uganda is a hard place to photograph gorillas. It is thicker than Rwanda and its dense bush conceals the gorillas. This Silverback was the very first I saw in real life, the one who sparked my fascination to understand this 98% of us, so human-like, so mysterious and precious.

Heavenly happened in Mara, a very “unexcited” scene coming up on a hill, where these beautiful giraffes seem to be having a conversation with one another. The dramatic sky that day brough tears to my eyes; there’s no other way to describe it than the photo's name.

This was the very first lion I ever photographed in Africa. This photograph was taken in Nambia at the Etosha National Park. It is the proximity that has kept this memory alive for years to eternity.

FOR THE LORD

For The Lord was not an easy photo to capture. Zebras are shy and they won't let you get too close. This is not a camera trap. This image was taken on foot, while walking side by side, letting them get familiar and relax in my presence until they allowed me to get close enough to lay low and get this beautiful image from the ground.
