HORSES OF ICELAND

SPEYSIDE

  • Simply put, Heavenly Father is perfection: the rare perfection that cannot be planned or predicted. The waterfall, Skógafoss, in full force shows the powerful energy of these water games. This photograph is almost unreal.

YOU WILL BECOME II

  • Voice of Young was taken on the ground in the snow at -15 °C; not an easy feat. But when you stay still, laying like a seal, the foals get curious and inch closer, creating the perfect picture: innocent, powerful, and pure.

GOD BLESS MOM

  • God Bless Mom is a personal favorite, if not my ultimate favorite. So human-like, so innocent, young, and curious. I named this horse “Muna,” which means “to remember” in Icelandic. To remember our split-second goodbye during a heavy winter storm, merely a moment before running to the airport, is the most beautiful parting gift Iceland has ever given me.

FOR THE WIND

  • For the Wind is a perfect example of Iceland any day of the year. The wind at full force and the beautiful stillness of horses packed together, facing the elements, is a scene I have witnessed many times. These young horses display their toughness and unity, working together to keep warm and protect themselves from the harsh Icelandic weather.

P

  • P is for perfection. In this case, perfection is created by a beam of light breaking through an overcast sky and gracing the horse, making it almost look artificial. This beautiful horse, running in full force, decided to stop for a split second and showcase his beauty, magestically framed by his surroundings.

DELICATE

  • Delicate was a serendipitous occurrence on a long commute from my favorite place in southern Iceland, Landmannalaugar, on a summer day. I did not know this horse, but I had to stop and photograph it. It was a cloudy day, and I knew that overexposing the image and creating this white-on-white effect was the most delicate and pure way to show the essence of this horse.

HEAVEN

  • Peter, this horse belonging to my good friend Sunna, was in the perfect state to photograph. Born black, he was transitioning to white, the most beautiful and unique color of an Icelandic horse. Pictured here in Vik, another one of my favorite places, the winds are strong and powerful. The landscape of Vik, which also happens to be Peter’s home, makes this image complete.

LOVE II

  • Love II is one of our most sought-after photos. It was taken during a meteorological alert in 2017 where the winds were strong enough to drag your body off the ground. It is that natural energy that brings this photo to life. Together with the horses’ unique colors, the resulting image is truly a gift from the heavens.

REGARDING STACKS

  • Regarding Stacks happened on a summer day with Stella, who kindly took me with her team to photograph a herd of one hundred horses running in the highlands of Iceland. These two horses cannot stay away from each other, and their color makes them stand out from the others. This image captures their beautiful relationship and closeness.

WET

  • A completely unpredictable rainy summer morning, dripping water, soaking wet. Wet embodies resilience, toughness, and stillness. It is proximity that makes this photograph work so well. Only a couple of steps away from this horse’s face you can see every hair, every raindrop, and every eyelash, helping to understand how strong these horses are and how much they can endure.

BASALT

  • Basalt was taken in March 2022. We had limited time as this photo was taken on a beach where the tide can swipe you away at a moment’s notice. It took patience to wait for the right moment and one afternoon a beautiful sunset graced us with the perfect soft light, setting around this beautiful grey horse in a magical way.

The rock formation is called basalt.

NEW EARTH

  • New Earth almost broke my back. Taking this photo was not easy and I honestly ended up sick after creating this image in Grindavík, an active volcano area since the boarder reopened from Covid lockdown in 2021.

As a photographer, I know this photo could be much stronger; however, there were many factors to take into consideration when getting this shot, like safety, gas, the hike up, and of course capturing the photo high up on a mountain with an active volcano in the foreground.

While it could be better, we prioritized safety and conducted ourselves in a manner that makes me proud and allowed us to show Icelandic people what their horses represent. Their oneness with nature is surreal and very clear after watching this horse so relaxed in proximity to a loud, hot volcano.

THE WATCHER II

  • The Watcher II became an obsession with proximity and intimacy that to this day stops me in my tracks. I took this photo when the seasons where changing and horses lose their winter coat. You can put your hand on this horse's thick hair and take out a fistful with one soft touch. Another beautiful sign of the changing seasons.

SLEEPNESS NIGHT

  • Taken in Iceland fall of 2017, a horse in the early winter darkness photographed outside the barn where a perfect beam of light happened to illuminate his head for a split second, giving me the chance to capture this mysterious and subtle portrait.

MY ROOTS GO DEEP

  • This horse’s gold mane reminds me of trees, reminds me of roots, reminds me of the importance of knowing yourself. Inspired by beautiful Markéta Irglová’s words:

    “Letting down my roots
I am getting good at being still
I've stopped chasing after things
I'm like the church upon a hill”

INNSAE III

  • Taken in Iceland March 2022 in the thick of a harsh Icelandic winter. I was straight off a plane flying from home to Skógafoss in southern Iceland with the opportunity to do something magical, knowing that a big storm was on its way.

In the water, feeling the chilling, -1 °C from a massive waterfall coming down around me, I was able to capture these playful horses who decided to explore the area. This photograph is mystical and the frozen scenery around the horses really shows how harsh and cold it gets in Iceland during the winter; however, it is their body language captured in this beautiful moment that makes the photo work in perfect harmony. It is one of my favorite moments ever captured.
